U.S. Department of State Issues Travel Warning for Mauritania ...

Travel Warning Map of MauritaniaSquaremouth recommends travel insurance for those traveling internationally, and policies available on squaremouth.com may include terrorism and non-medical evacuation coverage. These benefits may be of interest to travelers visiting areas with higher risk of terrorist attacks, and civil or political unrest.

According to the U.S. Department of State, an updated travel warning has been issued for Mauritania. The U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott has advised against all non-essential travel to the region. Threats of terrorist attacks by multiple terrorist organizations present safety and security concerns, particularly for Westerners.

U.S. citizens should be aware of their surroundings at all times, maintain a low profile and avoid highly publicized events where no security is present. Additionally, travelers are discouraged from venturing into more remote areas of Mauritania, especially without an experienced guide or vehicle.

The U.S. Department of State recommends travelers enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which facilitates emergency communication between travelers and the U.S. Embassy. For more information on the STEP program and other travel warnings, visit the U.S. Department of State website here.
