Expanding Your Vocabulary | HackCollege

expanding your vocabulary

As children, we went through grade school with reading and writing classes that taught us the same words that we now use today in everyday language. We were always emphasized how important it was to learn how to spell words, to learn how to read effectively, and to learn how to write efficiently. Today, we are college students and we?ve caught on the to basic learning process that is necessary to having a great vocabulary. Here are ways that you can expand your word toolbox.

Read, read, read

Reading really does expand your vocabulary in ways that may not seem noticeable right away. But when you start to read every single day, you begin to come across words that really stick out. You begin to question what words mean and you find yourself looking up the words that you don?t understand. Sentences start to make more sense to you in ways that they didn?t before you began reading again.

I suggest many different kinds of reading a day so that your mind gets a strong reading muscle. Different genres of books, poetry, training manuals, magazines, the newspaper, instruction manuals, and so on. Mixing it up definitely helps cultivate your word toolbox.

Write, write, write

Just like reading, writing is vitally important. After you come across those words that you don?t know and you begin to study their meanings, you can start to use them in your writing. Keeping a daily or weekly journal will help you strengthen this muscle so that the words become concreted in your head. Being able to use a strong vocabulary helps you in everyday conversations, it challenges you to think outside of the box, and it increases your social skills significantly. Buy a composition notebook and get to writing.

Did I mention that you should read? It?s direly important. Keep reading!

Learn a new word each week

Some dictionary or thesaurus websites will give you an option to opt into an email that is sent either daily or weekly that will give you a word to study, it?s meaning, and what context to use it in. A simple, easy to use site like www.dictionary.com can help you with this. Or the Oxford English Dictionary, www.oed.com, can give you a historical context to use a word. Whatever you choose, make sure that you learn the word before you use it in your speaking vocabulary.

?Substitute boring words

Some words are boring, including the word ?boring.? Instead of saying, ?the mean dog ate my homework,? say something like, ?the ferocious dog gobbled up my homework.? The reason why this is so important is because once you start to use these words, you become used to it. It becomes second nature for you to utilize them in your every day life.

All of these things will help you strengthen your vocabulary significantly. This will help you get a job, impress members of your interest group, and give you a boost when you have to write papers.

What else would you add to the list that would help someone strengthen their vocabulary?

Mark W. Kline, M.D.: The Fight of My Life: One Doctor's Crusade Against Pediatric AIDS

For most children, a birthday or holiday is a day of hope and joy. But for many children you probably do not know, December 1, World AIDS Day, may be the most important date on the calendar, signifying commitment and unity in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and the promise of many more birthdays and holidays to come.

As physician-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, I am firmly committed to American children, and cherish my role in helping to ensure that our children have access to health care second to none. It is through this service that my head -- and my heart -- have also led me beyond this country, to the other side of the globe, where I have met and treated some of the world's poorest and least fortunate children and families.

Witnessing the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on children and families across the globe has prompted me to act -- not just on December 1, but every day of the year. For nearly 17 years, I have led the development of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI), part of Texas Children's global health initiatives. What began as a small program in Romania today encompasses a network of state-of-the-art children's centers stretching across southern and East Africa, with more than 134,000 HIV-infected children in care.

Across Africa, our centers provide comprehensive medical, psychosocial and prevention services to thousands of HIV-infected infants, children and adult family members, as well as ever-growing numbers of adolescents and young adults -- survivors of what had been a disease almost uniformly lethal by five years of age. Thanks to the widespread availability of HIV testing and antiretroviral medications in places like Botswana, transmission of the virus, including transmission from mother to baby, has been dramatically reduced. This huge public health success story is restoring hope to whole communities across Africa and around the world. And now, the lessons we have learned in scaling up the care, treatment and prevention of pediatric HIV/AIDS are being applied to a multitude of other medical conditions including malaria, tuberculosis, cancer and sickle cell disease, that have robbed children of their health and lives for generations.

My work with BIPAI has made me, and many others, better physicians. I have learned how to diagnose disease using only my hands, eyes, and ears; how to deliver medical care under the most challenging conditions; how to improvise; and how to forge health care partnerships. I have learned how to talk to people who are not only afraid for their lives but also frightened of me, and the tools that I hold. And I have learned how to turn a handful of health professionals and a modest building with virtually no equipment and only a few medications into a thriving medical clinic that provides a lifeline to thousands of sick children.

I have seen firsthand the lifesaving power of modest investments in health care, and I firmly believe that a better future for all citizens of the world will certainly mean a better future for our own children.

So, on this World AIDS Day, I ask that each of you take a moment to reflect on how you can best help. Volunteering, advocating, and donating are just a few of the ways that individuals can impact the fight against HIV/AIDS. Certainly, on World AIDS Day 2012, we have much to celebrate, but also much work yet to do. The reward for our efforts will be nothing less than many thousands of birthdays and holidays that will be cause for celebration, not sadness. Please join me in the fight of my life, against pediatric AIDS.

Google buys BufferBox, might give Amazon Locker a run for its money

Google has just snapped up BufferBox, a Waterloo, Ontario-based startup that offers temporary lockers for online purchases much like the ones recently deployed by Amazon. Instead of 7-Elevens and RadioShacks however, the relatively young startup has only just started a deal to install parcel kiosks in Canada's Metrolinx GO Transit stations. The Mountain View company hopes to keep BufferBox alive through the acquisition, with plans for 100 kiosks in Greater Toronto and Hamilton in the next year. Of course, we can't help but think this could all be part of Google's master plan for a rumored same-day delivery service that might make Amazon a touch nervous. Hopefully this means future Nexus deliveries will be a just little faster, eh?

Lindsay Lohan charged with assault in NYC

Lindsay Lohan was arrested this morning and charged with third-degree assault after a fight at a nightclub in the Chelsea section of New York City, police said.

The 26-year-old actress was arrested on the misdemeanor charge after she allegedly struck a woman at Club Avenue on 10th Avenue and 17th street at around 4 a.m. this morning. She was taken to New York's 10th precinct and received a desk appearance ticket, police told ABCNews.com. She was seen leaving the courtroom just after 7:30 a.m.

Lohan allegedly assaulted the woman during a dispute that escalated. The actress, a regular at the club, was banned from the establishment earlier this year following an incident in which she Tweeted that Justin Timberlake was seeing another woman at the club when he was dating Jessica Biel, WABC reported.

Thursday's arrest follows Lohan's previous arrest in September outside a nearby nightclub inside the Dream Hotel, when a pedestrian claimed the starlet hit him with her car and did not stop. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute that case.

In late September Lohan was also involved in a hotel-room quarrel that began over a set of cell phone photos allegedly taken by a part time Congressional aide. After Lohan claimed the aide, Christian LaBella, had assaulted her, he was arrested, but the misdemeanor charges against him were later dropped.

On Sunday Lohan's Lifetime film "Liz & Dick," in which she portrays Elizabeth Taylor, premiered, and was watched by 3.5 million viewers, receiving scathing reviews. The film was positioned as the actress' comeback following years of trouble with the law.

While living in Los Angeles, the actress was incarcerated six times, but spent less than a total of two weeks behind bars. Last year she also spent 35 days under house arrest after pleading no contest to stealing a $2,500 necklace.

In March, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner took Lohan off probation from a 2007 DUI case. Over the past five years, the actress has been in and out of rehab five times as she has battled drug and alcohol problems.

The Rubik's Cube That Isn't

This is your brain making things up.

What you see isn't really there.

Even if I tell you "this isn't what you think," you'll think it anyway ? until I make a simple move, and suddenly ? you know.

These illusions were created by an artist who calls himself Brusspup. What he does is an exercise in anamorphosis, a conjuring trick that takes advantage of how our brains make sense of the world. If you know how, you can create an image which makes no sense until the viewer happens onto a particular ? and it's a very particular ? spot. Once the viewer finds the right angle ? the only place where he or she can see what the artist intended ? suddenly, boom!- the drawing leaps into three dimensions.

That's because in that precise location, the brain is presented with an impossible, contradictory set of inputs that it automatically reassembles into a coherent illusion. You know it's not true ? all you have to do is step an inch off your position ? but when it's there, it seems uncannily real.

I once wrote a post called Woman On Street Attacked by Giant Snail, It Seems that breaks this down visually. I used the chalk drawings of a street artist to show how it's done. Check that out, if you like. The cool thing about Brusspup, is he not only creates wonderfully cool illusions, he then posts the keys to what he's done on the You Tube site, so you can do them yourself.
